"Origin"

Education policy for overseas Chinese has always been an important issue for our government. In 1953, the Ministry of Education accepted the first group of overseas Chinese students, including students attending National Taiwan Normal University. In 1955, due to an increase in the number of overseas Chinese students coming to Taiwan for further study, the government established University Preparatory School for Overseas Chinese Students at the location of National Overseas Chinese Senior High School. In 1959, the Ministry of Education placed the University Preparatory School for Overseas Chinese Students under the aegis of National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, and National Chengchi University. In 1962, the preparatory school was independently established in Luzhou and formally named National University Preparatory School for Overseas Chinese Students. In 1984, the school moved to its current location in Linkou and has since become an important cradle for the overseas Chinese student university preparatory education.

National Taiwan Normal University has valued the quality and development of the education for overseas Chinese students. The Overseas Chinese Education Hall was established in the past to improve the educational environment for overseas Chinese students.

In recent years, National Taiwan Normal University has established the College of International Studies and Education for Overseas Chinese Students, the Department of Applied Chinese Language and Culture, and the Department of Chinese as a Second Language , aiming to enhance teacher education for global Chinese teachers.

In 2006, National University Preparatory School for Overseas Chinese students merged with National Taiwan Normal University and and was renamed National Taiwan Normal University Division of Preparatory Programs for Overseas Chinese Students. Each year approximately 1,100 to 1,300 overseas Chinese students complete this program and continue with their education at different Taiwan universities. In the 21st century, National Taiwan Normal University has become the university with the most overseas Chinese students in Taiwan.
